It’s Black History Month
January was one hell of a year but we got through it. I don’t remember where I read that meme but it reeeeeally hit home 😅
February! Also Black History Month. I feel the need to note that highlighting incredible Black talent in the design and creative industry is important all year round and the links today felt especially relevant.
Jon Key
A Queer Black man originally from the small rural town Seale, Alabama now living and working in Bushwick, NY. A writer, designer, and painter, his work excavates the lineage and history of his identity through four themes: Southernness, Blackness, Queerness, and Family. You might have seen his Google Doodle recently, pictured below.
Issa Rae and Hollywood’s Unkept Promises
It was hard to concentrate on the article after reading “She’s developing at least two new projects for HBO”. Everything Issa Rae touches is gold.
Where are all the Black Designers?
A volunteer-run, nonprofit design advocacy organization that I’ve shared before but it has evolved and progressed a lot since it started in 2020.
Christopher John Rodgers
One day I will hang some CJR in my closet and it will be glorious. Emotional and sensitive clothing with a focus on effortful dressing, directed towards an individual with a strong sense of self.
Jay-Z’s Grammys Speech
ICYMI, Jay-Z’s speech at the Grammys this week was hilarious and worth a watch. He called out the Academy's snubs against Beyoncé and drew attention to the lack of recognition Black artists endure.
That’s all for now! As always, more links are below.

Resource of the Week
The “ultimate design multitool” feels like a big claim but I have to admit this is a pretty fun online tool to play around with considering it’s still in beta.
Lucky Dip Links
Mystic Garden
The German-Icelandic artist duo Veronika Sedlmair and Brynjar Sigurðarson present a series of new works that materialize an uncanny revival of romantic ideas. Wish I was in Paris to see this or had the funds to buy all the lamps.
No Free Pitches
Porto Rocha is saying no to unpaid pitches to change our industry for the better. You can add your name to the list too.
Contemporary100
Really into this Instagram account which is an amazing resource to learn more about global contemporary art.
NYBG
New York Botanic Garden has a new brand and I’m a fan of the wonky fonty that’s going on. Read about the process here. Lovely work by Wolff Olins.
Pat McGrath for Maison Margiela
The makeup for this show is getting so much hype and rightly so.
Trend Report 2024
Illustration trends for the year presented by Jacky Winter—who know a thing or two about this illo biz.
Figma Dev Mode
Excited to try this properly now that it’s officially out of beta. Dev Mode is a new space in Figma for developers with features that help you translate designs into code, faster.
Pixel Poetry
With the right tool, any person can become a poet. Kind of.
